Albena Nikolova
NOSTALGHIA
My name is Albena Nikolova. I am a Bulgarian visual artist based in Rome, Italy. My skills are mainly centered around photography, photo retouch, illustration, and graphic and video design. I love both digital and analog and I excel working with mixed media.
After a year of catastrophic attacks on women's rights and gender equality I wanted to focus on some experimental work that talks to being a woman.
The name of my project is “Nostalghia” taken from the 1983 Soviet-Italian drama film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.
Nostalgia /nɒˈstaldʒ(ɪ)ə/ noun: a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.
The nostalgia as a woman.
I carried out this visual research in the places of the homonymous film by Andrej Tarkovsky, more precise the "submerged church" of San Vittorino near Cittaducale, Tuscany, Italy.
I tried to capture the essence of the sensation of overcoming one's spiritual alienation, giving it a face and linking it to the aesthetics of the female body.
